'The Hybrid Series - New Paintings' 23 June - 15 July, 2006
Barbara Freeman has had over forty solo exhibitions of paintings, prints and installation work in Ireland, Britain, the United States, Hungary, Germany and the former Yugoslavia. She has had residencies in Hungary, Slovenia, Macedonia, Switzerland, Germany and the U.S.A., and she was Abbey Fellow at the British School in Rome. She has taken part in numerous group shows, most recently in 'New Irish Painting' at the Ormeau Baths Gallery, Belfast, and 'Printmakers' at the Gordom Gallery, Derry. She has work in private, public, corporate and national collections. She has lived in Belfast since 1980. This is Barbara's first exhibition in Cork.
A word about the titles; the larger paintings in the exhibition were planned when the artist was driving through the Appalachian Mountains, constantly crossing or following rivers with sonorous names; 'Soundings' has to do with both water and music; and the little 'Delta' paintings began with an installation which she made at the Millennium Courts Arts Centre, Portadown, entitled 'The Banks of the Bann'. A book on her drawings and works on paper over the last forty years is to be published in November. |
