Past Exhibition > Eamon Colman - Introduction

Eamon Colman

'Between Bog and a Sagging Wall'

12 October - 2 November.

Eamon Colman is a painter of sophisticated, almost abstract canvases. Almost abstract because, as Eamon has said, in his soul he is a landscape painter, and his paintings record a particular response to a moment in time and space. Often the viewer can divine the shapes of water, trees, mountains, plants or other symbolic forms, yet ultimately the canvases remain ambiguous. An inveterate walker, Colman has journeyed widely and frequently to Africa, India, the wildernesses still existent in America and Europe.

These journeys enable him as an artist to create landscapes that come from his interaction with place, light and his experience of solitude. Eamon uses vibrant, glowing colour to articulate these instinctive responses and the results are joyous, celebratory canvases that radiate an internal light. The Salt River Series of paintings are the product of his travels along the riverbanks of Co. Kilkenny and the south east of Ireland and formed part of his recent touring exhibition of Wales. His paintings are in the collections of the Arts Council, A.I.B Bank, American Express, Bank of Ireland, Deutche Bank, the Office of Public Works, and the Danish Arts Council among others.
