MICHAEL CULLEN - 'New Paintings'
12th April - 7th May Click here to preview the exhibition
Born in Dublin in 1946, Michael Cullen studied at the Central School of Art and Design in London and the National College of Art and Design from 1970 - 73. He has spent various periods living and working in France, Spain, Morocco, the United States, Mexico and Berlin. Travel often influences his strongly expressionist and vibrantly colourful canvases. This current work reflects the concerns raised by his time spent in the dramatic landscape of rural Spain. As always, figuration is central to his boldly designed and often autobiographical canvases.
Cullen's work is in the collections of the National Gallery of Ireland, the Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin, the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and the Dundee Contemporary Arts Society Scotland, among others. Awards include the Independent Artists major painting award in 1984; the National Portrait Award in 1989, and the Sunday Independent's Painter of the Year in 1998. Michael Cullen is a member of Aosdana and lives and works in Dublin. |
