Michael Quane - 'Bouyeds' 2007
11 October - 03 November, 2007 Click here to view the exhibitionThe Vangard Gallery is delighted to present Bouyeds, an exhibition of new work by acclaimed sculptor Michael Quane. One of the most accomplished stone sculptors in the country, Quane's work is characterized by intertwined human/animal forms, intricate drawings in stone that take the breath away. Gravity also plays a major part in Michael Quane's work possibly going back to time spent as a science student -"Gravity is such a huge part in a sculpture, underlying the mechanics of the piece". This exploration of gravity is pursued further in his series of swimmers and floating figures. Art lecturer and historian Vera Ryan relates that without preparatory drawings the artist sets to work on a block of stone and with a nod to Michelangelo, releases the form with hundreds of thousands of chisel marks and scrapes. It is the freshness of Quane's sculptures, this ability to breathe life into stone that distinguishes his often puckish figures from the norm. His sculptures are points of entry into a world of endless possibilities, where animals mutate and human figures shape-change in a way that is at once solid and ethereal Michael Quane was born in Cork in 1962 and studied at the Crawford College of Art And Design. Since his early years at The Crawford College of Art in Cork, Quane has exhibited throughout Europe and the US and has had worldwide commissions for his work which are in the collections of the University College Cork; the Office of Public Works; the Butler Gallery Kilkenny; the Nicholas Treadwell Gallery, London; the University of Limerick, Cork Corporation and A.I.B. Bank. Michael Quane is a member of Aosdana since 1998 and was elected to the R.H.A. in 2004. The recently-published monograph 'Michael Quane Works 1985 - 2007 ' with essays by Hilary Pyle and Aidan Dunne was launched to coincide with the exhibition opening by Professor Tom Dunne on 11th October, 2007 |
