Past Exhibition > Simon English

10 April - 3 May, 2008

Meeting. Oil on canvas. 30 x 30 cm, 2007 Simon English 'Departures'

"The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in the mind at the same time, and still retain the ability to function. One should, for example, be able to see that things are hopeless and yet be determined to make them otherwise." F. Scott Fitzgerald, "The Crack-Up" (1936)

Simon English's new work seeks to mirror a transient landscape of conflicting emotion. His atmospheric paintings see the introduction of new motifs, such as cars, a helter-skelter, a plane, a boat and a circus tent. The subjects of his brooding; blurred canvases are at once unfamiliar yet evocative and haunting. His paintings bear the marks of intense observation, both of the objects and of the means of translating them to the canvas, and are pristinely finished. He has exhibited extensively and his work is in the collections of the Irish Museum of Modern Art; Limerick University; A.I.B. Bank; the Department of Trade, Enterprise and Employment and the Arts Council of Ireland. Simon English lives and works in North Cork.
