Siobhan McDonald - 'Messenger'
13th September - 6 October, 2007 Click here to preview the exhibitionSiobhan McDonald's latest body of work entitled 'Messenger' explores the fundamentals of place and landscape; not reproduced slavishly through the use of landmark, but by an instinctive response to these most elemental aspects of our existence as they come under pressure. The interaction between the artist and natural phenomena manifests as an energy stream which itself is directed towards creating each canvas. This work is the result of McDonald as an interpreter or translator of the myriad clues that abound when the artist investigates our relationship with boundaries of place, the impact of our presence, the air we process, the water we displace, the ground we walk on. The messages we can read, if we choose to read them, are at once positive and potentially pessimistic, which McDonald reminds us is a powerful dynamic to harness. The Chinese word for crisis and opportunity is the same word. Siobhan McDonald was born in New York and brought up in Monaghan. She trained in Belfast, Amsterdam and New York and has exhibited throughout Ireland and abroad. She lives and works in Dublin. Her work is widely collected and commissioned both privately and commercially and is included in the following collections : O.P.W., Ulster Museum, University College Dublin, AIB, Bank of Ireland, Four Seasons Hotel Group, Price Waterhouse, Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, University of Ulster. |
