The Vangard Gallery

Tim Goulding

First solo exhibition by the artist in Cork city since 2000, following on from the very successful show at the OS/B Gallery in Enniskerry, Co Wicklow in November 2005.

Koompartoo is an Aboriginal word for new beginning or fresh start.

These paintings originate from a trip the artist took around the world in 2004 / 2005 visiting Australia, New Zealand, French Polynesia (The Marquesa Islands) and Mexico (Oaxaca City). Later trips to Barcelona, Venice and Sicily also informed the work. You can glean references to the baked earth of Australia's Red Centre, the azure and turquoise of the South Pacific and dazzling light on the crumbling walls of an ancient Mexican City. The flaking plasterwork and graffiti on the walls of Barcelona, Venice and Taormina inspire the most recent paintings in this series.

The visit to Venice and Sicily was by way of a honeymoon with his new wife Georgina. They were married at Castle Leslie in November 2005.

These new paintings are a radical departure from the work that the artist is known for and are evidence of an awakening to a vibrant new palette of heightened colour inspired by travels in the tropics amongst other previously unvisited terrains and cultures.
